It was the last Eighth Grade School Dance…

posted by Joe in Uncategorized

I was thinking about something today, a memory , and I thought I might want to write down what I was thinking about.

It was one of the last songs at the last eight grade dance which was the only eight grade, heck, the only  junior high dance I ever attended. The song that was playing was Survior, the Search is Over. The most beautiful girl I had ever seen up to that point in my life walked all the way across the dance floor and asked me to dance. Looking back at it, I hope it was me she was asking. She didn’t speak, she just did a slight sideways twist and put out her hand. I was sitting sort of next to another guy and who knows when I stood up and walked out to the dance floor with her maybe she was just being polite and danced with me anyway. If it was a mistake, I am glad she gave  me the dance. I hope she really meant to dance with me.  We didn’t speak, we just danced and I have know idea where I learned to dance but I was doing it. When what was going to become my favorite song ever was over we just stopped dancing, she turned and walked away. I did the same.

In high school the following year we spoke five words when I asked her out, the only five words we spoke to each other. She declined. I was broken hearted.  Life’s course did bring us back together one  last time when she was the only other senior in an office class with my girlfriend at the time, this lady from my past told my girlfriend that I once had a crush on her. I wonder what else she said? I’ll probably never know.  Like I said we spoke a total of five words.   I will remember that night in the small gym at East Coloma and I will always remember that dance .

I am still looking for the one person that will capture my heart forever and yep I’m getting older and feel like I’m running out of time sometimes, but I know this time when I see the most beautiful woman in the world walking across the dance floor towards me I’m going to say more than five words, and maybe included in those five words plus, “the search is over” will be a vow and not a song lyric.
